Liz Hilton | Funeral Celebrant

Hello, my name is Liz Hilton, and I am your funeral celebrant in Greater Manchester, the surrounding areas, and also Cirencester.

I live in Greater Manchester and have built a life that blends family, community, and meaningful work. After serving in the Royal Air Force, I raised a family and later went on to run my own business, which has given me a strong sense of independence, organisation, and purpose. Through all these experiences, I have learned that what matters most is kindness, understanding, and the ability to listen properly.

Becoming a celebrant felt like a natural next step. Over the years, I have often been the calm person others turn to when life feels uncertain or overwhelming. I understand how powerful it can be to have someone by your side who brings care, steadiness, and clarity when emotions are raw. That is the role I now play for families at one of the most significant moments in life, saying goodbye.

I am professionally trained by the United Kingdom Society of Celebrants (UKSOC), and I take great care in the work I do. I have been described as warm, grounded, and easy to talk to. I value honesty, empathy, and balance, qualities that shape the ceremonies I write and the way I hold space for others.

Although my home is in Greater Manchester, my brother and his wife live in Cirencester, and their home has become like my second home. All of my family, have been amazing and supportive, which has deepened my appreciation for the importance of family, especially during emotional times.

Outside of my work, I enjoy time with my children and grandchildren, long walks with my dog, and singing with my choir. I love to lose myself in a good book, to spend time in the garden, and to travel whenever I can. These moments remind me how precious life is, and how important it is to appreciate it.

 My role as a celebrant is to walk beside families through life’s hardest goodbyes, helping them feel supported, comforted, and able to express what matters most when it is needed most.

Every life has a story to tell, and every farewell deserves to be personal, heartfelt, and true. I take time to listen, really listen, not just to the stories about the person who has died but to the feelings behind them. During our first meeting, we will talk about what made them who they were, their humour, passions, quirks, and the little details that made them unique. These conversations often bring smiles as well as tears, and they form the heart of the ceremony we create together.

My aim is to capture the essence of the person so that everyone listening feels they have met them again, even if just for a few moments. From there, I write and lead a service that tells their story with honesty and tenderness. You may wish to include readings, music, or contributions from family and friends, all carefully woven together so the ceremony flows naturally and feels true to your loved one’s life.

I work with families of all faiths and none, creating ceremonies that may be completely non-religious, quietly spiritual, or include small touches of faith. Some families prefer to celebrate a life lived to the full, while others seek a gentle, reflective tone. Whatever the style, the focus is always the same: to create something meaningful, comforting, and personal.

On the day, my focus is on the family. I aim to be a calm, caring presence, ensuring everything unfolds gently and with respect. Whether it is guiding those who are reading, liaising with the funeral director, or simply being there as a steady hand, my goal is for you to feel supported and able to say goodbye with love, dignity, and peace.
