Wedding and Funeral Celebrant in Cumbria
My name is Sara Mason and I am your Family, Wedding and Funeral Celebrant in Cumbria. I am married and have two grown up sons. Originally hailing from Lancashire, I relocated to Cumbria 19 years ago with my then small sons. We didn’t know a soul here, but I’ve always enjoyed a challenge and we eventually settled into a lovely way of life, enjoying the countryside and the coastline of the Lake District. I subsequently met my husband and we enjoyed years of exotic travels.
My career has been varied, I trained as a nurse 35 years ago and have enjoyed many different roles over the years. In 2022 we bought and renovated a couple of holiday cottages and since they opened in 2023 my life was very busy with running the cottages and managing my job, team and patients.
In December 2024, we made the momentous decision for me to give up my often stressful nursing to concentrate on the cottages. Not one to only have one iron in the fire and fearing I might miss the type of connections I enjoyed with my patients and their families, I decided to look into training as a celebrant.
My life now continues to be busy but is peaceful, balancing family life, training my lovely young Cocker Spaniel ( A work in progress) and making sure my cottage guests have fabulous stays. I love sunny evenings in my garden with John, sipping a glass of bubbly and berating the dog for bounding into my flower beds. I have the most fabulous friends, my diary is packed full of plans for our adventures and escapades together. I’m happy hiking the woods, and low! fells in all weathers. In short I’m living and loving my life.
My experiences in nursing and indeed in my own life are central to my ability to really listen and understand people and their families. I am fascinated by peoples stories, one of my favourite pastimes is people watching! Coupled with a love of creative writing and my own often dry humour and practical outlook on life I create ceremonies that are truly unique to a person. Being down to earth and easy to get along with puts my clients at ease as we get to know each other and understand the type of ceremony you want.
Many funeral ceremonies are fine, respectful, but a little perfunctory. A celebrant should be a little more human and show a bit more warmth. That is what I will bring to your ceremony. For a funeral my aim is to really dig down into the essence of your loved one and bring their story to life. Yes with funeral ceremonies there is often great sadness, but they can also be joyous and have sparkle. Your loved ones personality, whatever that is should shine through and leave everyone with the warmth of who they were.
My own unique life experiences, lead me to also offer a truly person led ceremony. I can create and write ceremonies for people with terminal illness. This can be a funeral service planned in advance or a life service whilst the person is still living their life.
The opposite spectrum of saying goodbye are the moments of wonder in life, love and birth and everything in between. The rich tapestry of life needs celebrating at every opportunity.
My Wedding, naming and bespoke ceremonies are where we can really let our imaginations run riot. I’m even happy to don my hiking boots and get into the Lake District with you.
Bringing someone’s ideas and vision to life is an amazing privilege. Whatever you dream of for your ceremony, let’s talk and get planning.
