Want to be a Funeral Celebrant? Look before you leap!

As Funeral Celebrants a “cairn” may be viewed as an ideal metaphor for the work that they do… building a funeral ceremony, piece by piece (stone by stone) of the life lived by the person that has died. These pieces are then assembled in a manner that will pay a fitting tribute / life celebrantion for the bereaved family and friends. It can be demanding, emotional, sometimes just plain hard, but it is also one of the most rewarding professions you can imagine!

At the UK Society of Celebrants, we will cover most things you will need to learn to conduct a heartfelt meaningful ceremony that will bring comfort to those attending. From understanding grief, to working with funeral directors, to interviewing families (in practice) as well as creating a fitting tribute and ceremony, then finally presenting the ceremony in a safe and caring environment. Everyone who has completed the course said they came away with the realisation that there is so much more to putting a good funeral together than most people realise and being put under the pressure of having only a couple of days to pull a ceremony together gave them a taste of how it really is.

So if you are looking for a well paid, 9 till 5 job Monday to Friday, then don‚’t read on because that is not what funeral celebrancy is all about. Rather it is a vocation, it is immediate, can be time consuming and requires total focus to be able to meet the demands of a short work around time. However, you can also usually work around hours that suit you. It can mean though putting aside plans made, to going to meet with a bereaved family while they are still gathered together.

That being said, we have not met a Funeral Celebrant who does not love what they do! The satisfaction of receiving a phone call, letter, card of thanks, goes beyond words. A good Funeral Celebrant can make a difference in people‚’s lives that will, quite literally, stay with them forever.

So if you haven‚’t been put off by odd hours and shortness of preparation time, you might consider seriously learning more.
