Hi I’m Laura Lai Coughlin and I’m your Family, Wedding Celebrant in Dubai .
I’m originally from Sussex, but have lived internationally my entire adult life, with stints in China, Malaysia, and, for the last 12 years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been my home.
Outside of working as a food and lifestyle journalist for various international magazines, MCing award shows, and sporadic appearances on radio and TV in Dubai, you’ll catch me wakesurfing the glassy waters of the Arabian Gulf, polishing off a shawarma, and, well, marrying absolute legends across the UAE and beyond.
I became a celebrant when a friend and her fiancée cornered me at a garden party, and asked if I’d wed them. About two weeks later, I was asked again by another very good friend and her fella. Both couples reckoned I’d smash it. Maybe they could be right? I’ve always loved performing arts, acting in plays and musicals, doing a bit of comedy improv, and hosting local events. A panic Google search, fabulous four-month UK Society of Celebrants (UKSOC) course, a handful of weddings and killer reviews later – and here I am… ready to meet you.
Because you and your Celebrant will be spending valuable and memorable moments together, choosing the right person is super important. Here’s my process in a nutshell: you find me on the interwebs (wahay! You’ve done that already). We’ll then have an initial one-to-one, non-obligatory Zoom call. During this call, we not only put faces to names but you have an opportunity to ask me any wonderful and weird questions you have in your mind about how the whole getting-hitched-in-Dubai thing works. If you think we’ve hit it off, we lock in your date with a deposit.
Then we’ll have ‘The Chat’ where I ask a million different ways to spill the tea about your relationship, and basically, we have a huge natter about you and everything you want for your special day.
Then it’s crunch time for me. I lock myself away and craft you a knockout, 100% custom-made script that is nothing but you two. Everything you’ve given me both via my questionnaire and stories shared in-person or over Zoom work its magic here, and captures your quirks, tells your epic story and celebrates your love. Being your biggest fan will have paid off for this moment – trust me, wait ‘til showtime.
At your wedding, I’ll greet your friends and family like a boss, help set the scene you want, and create the vibe you’re after. All you have to do is shine bright like the diamonds you are, and say your ‘I love you’s’. And hey, I’ll even stay for a glass of bubbly if you want me to (you will, ‘cos by this point we’ll be mates).
I honestly still can't believe that I get to do this for a living. I’m so humbled to be a part of the happiest day of a couple's life. It is a proper privilege to help two amazing people get wed, whether that’s in the courtyard of a beautiful Dubai hotel, on the beach with our toes in the sand, on top of a dune surrounded by camels or centre-stage on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab. Rest assured that wherever you are, my ray of sunshine approach to life will make sure you two feel like the legends you are on your big day. And if I can make that day as epic as possible for you, I will do whatever it takes. Well not anything... hmm, maybe. Call me. I'll see.
